Platinum Stars suffered a 3-1 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup’s last 16 round.
Stars did not do badly in the game as they fought till the last sweat, but it was Sundowns that were more hungry for the spot in the next round than any other team. The first minute of the match saw Robert Ng’ambi directing cross from the right flank but just went near the post. It was this very same chance that gave the first half entertainment and took supporters from quiet to chanting.
Sundowns were great in the first half hour and clocked a lead at just minutes by Mzikayise Mashaba, who received it as a build up from Themba Zwane and Siyanda Zwane. Stars could not have let Sundowns lead before half time as they played well and built good balls towards the front. In their response, just before the break, Robert Ng’ambi put Ndumiso Mabena into space on the right of the penalty area and his low shot-cross was swept home by Eleazar Rodgers to make it 1-1.
Second half received more scoring chances and was rhythmic in a sense that Stars were fighting for another goal, unfortunately their game changed as Stars were somewhat unfortunate after being forced into replacing key attacking players Ng’ambi and Mogakolodi Ngele, who both suffered injuries
In the 82nd minute, Billiat scored the second for Sundowns and two minutes later, Kekana extended the lead with his shot direct from a free kick to end the match to place Sundowns in the quarter finals.
